Fashion Research Institute Changing the Fashion Industry at Runway 3.0 Show
NEW YORK — May 3, 2010 —As designs from Buffalo State University’s student fashion designers took the stage Saturday, a groundbreaking event for the fashion industry was happening simultaneously. The student’s designs, worn by avatars joined them on the catwalk. In this history-making, mirrored event, technical support and access to Virtual Runway™ was provided by the Fashion Research Institute (FRI).
With the theme of the senior show this year being Runway 3.0, students were tasked with adding various sorts of technology to their garment collection. Add to the overwhelming success of recently released films in 3D, and you’ve got the perfect vehicle for combining the best of both worlds, real and virtual.

“In today’s market, where multi-channel marketing is so essential to the success of a new designer, virtual product design is savings thousands of dollars in bringing designs from concept to reality.” Says FRI CEO Shenlei Winkler. “We worked side-by-side with the students to help with the technical design aspects of the physical garments as well as with the development of their virtual garments and their virtual runway show.”
Several students at Buffalo State participated in a virtual world product design environment, provided by FRI, giving them a fast, easy, natural way to develop their apparel without the need to learn arcane coding. By mirroring the virtual world design to the real world manufacture students learned about the significant economic benefits this medium provides.
